Following on from last night’s success, I was sure that I would end up punting this one pretty hard, but it certainly did not work out that way. Also, I tried to focus a little bit more on explaining why I made each pick, although this draft turned out fairly simple.
Pack 1 pick 1:
Shatter, Trigon of Corruption, Salvage Scout, Sylvok Lifestaff, Carapace Forger, Volition Reins, Bleak Coven Vampires, Withstand Death, Screeching Silcaw, Rust Tick, Razorfield Thresher, Tumble Magnet, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon, Golden Urn, Plains
Skithiryx is one of the best reasons to go infect, a guy who can get there all by himself in the right deck and just an all round bomb. Easy first pick.
Pack 1 pick 2:
Memnite, Wing Puncture, Sky-Eel School, Leaden Myr, Necrogen Censer, Steady Progress, Goblin Gaveleer, Vigil for the Lost, Glint Hawk, Darksteel Axe, Glimmerpost, Horizon Spellbomb, Saberclaw Golem, Forest
With no infect cards in the pack at all, I guess we just take the best non-rare piece of equipment in the set, which can go into literally any deck in this format.
Pack 1 pick 3:
Culling Dais, Blight Mamba, Blade-Tribe Berserkers, Alpha Tyrranax, Infiltration Lens, Plague Stinger, Sunspear Shikari, Darksteel Juggernaut, Vulshok Replica, Moriok Replica, Auriok Replica, Forest, Scrapdiver Serpent
This pick was fairly pivotal as to whether I wanted to jump into a more controlling deck or infect, and I plumped for the Stinger reasoning that both were still options and this at least cut infect to my left.
Pack 1 pick 4:
Vector Asp, Kemba’s Skyguard, Wing Puncture, Assault Strobe, Goblin Gaveleer, Soliton, Auriok Sunchaser, Flameborn Hellion, Snapsail Glider, Rust Tick, Horizon Spellbomb, Plains
Rust Tick is a great way of making sure that your infect guys connect, and he’s just a solid all round card. Also, I don’t view Vector Asp as a playable guy, really.
Pack 1 pick 5:
Grindclock, Goblin Gaveleer, Wall of Tanglecord (FOIL), Golem’s Heart, Blunt the Assault, Vulshok Replica, Relic Putrescence, Flight Spellbomb, Exsanguinate, Stoic Rebuttal, Mountain
I love me some Grindclock with proliferate, and that also lends itself to a controlling U/B build. I wasn’t completely sold, but it seemed reasonable.
Pack 1 pick 6:
Neurok Invisimancer, Oxidda Daredevil, Trigon of Infestation, Turn Aside, Tel-Jilad Defiance, Tainted Strike, Molten Psyche, Golden Urn, Mountain, Scrapdiver Serpent (FOIL)
Again, with something like Contagion Clasp it can just steadily overwhelm some opponents.
Pack 1 pick 7:
Wing Puncture, Neurok Invisimancer, Goblin Gaveleer, Alpha Tyrranax, Relic Putrescence, Exsanguinate, Stoic Rebuttal, Trigon of Mending, Forest
It’s got infect written on it and could be good in the slower build, potentially comboing with something like Tumble Magnet or Vedalken Certarch.
Pack 1 pick 8:
Contagious Nim, Blight Mamba, Ezuri, Renegade Leader, Tel-Jilad Defiance, Flesh Allergy, Neurok Replica, Mountain, Fume Spitter
And then a pack with four cards that we really want. I took the Nim as I had picked up no green thus far, and wanted to try to cut the archetype, something that picking the removal wouldn’t have allowed me to do.
Pack 1 pick 9:
Salvage Scout, Bleak Coven Vampires, Withstand Death, Screeching Silcaw, Razorfield Thresher, Golden Urn, Plains
In case we do end up with some sort of U/B proliferating infectious mill deck, I guess…
Pack 1 pick 10:
Wing Puncture, Necrogen Censer, Goblin Gaveleer, Vigil for the Lost, Glimmerpost, Forest
He’s very good with Darksteel Axe, red has good removal options and if we pick up multiple Tainted Strikes he could be worth considering.
Pack 1 pick 11:
Culling Dais, Blade-Tribe Berserkers, Alpha Tyrranax, Infiltration Lens, Forest
Infiltration lens is not the second coming of Skullclamp, but it can be closest in the infect deck (the other option being a very aggressive R/W deck with multiple Gavelers and Shikari).
Pack 1 pick 12:
Vector Asp, Wing Puncture, Assault Strobe, Plains
Guess I’ll take him on the wheel, but I still won’t play him.
Pack 1 pick 13:
Blunt the Assault, Relic Putrescence, Mountain
Again lends itself much more to the slower, controlling version of the deck.
Pack 1 pick 14:
Golden Urn, Mountain
Pack 1 pick 15:
A reasonable first pack, but one that needs the second booster to decide if we’re going slow and controlling, or more typical aggro infect.
Pack 2 pick 1:
Necropede, Melt Terrain, Necrogen Censer, Vault Skyward, Copperhorn Scout (FOIL), Golem Foundry, Blunt the Assault, Grand Architect, Loxodon Wayfarer, Flameborn Hellion, Auriok Edgewright, Plague Stinger, Bellowing Tanglewurm, Origin Spellbomb, Plains
I chose Necropede over Plague Stinger as he’s great in the mirror and I was low on removal of any kind, and over Grand Architect because of some of the late coming infect cards in the previous pack.
Pack 2 pick 2:
Grasp of Darkness, Contagious Nim (FOIL), Blight Mamba, Darkslick Drake, Ichorclaw Myr, Infiltration Lens, Sylvok Lifestaff, Carapace Forger, Vedalken Certarch, Sunspear Shikari, Vulshok Replica, Neurok Replica, Mountain, Memoricide
I’m sure Grasp of Darkness is the pick here, I just got carried away with worrying about if I would have enough infect dudes to make it work.
Pack 2 pick 3:
Sky-Eel School, Shape Anew, Leaden Myr, Necrogen Censer, Copperhorn Scout, Dross Hopper, Goblin Gaveleer, Necrogen Scudder, Throne of Geth, Disperse, Saberclaw Golem, Mountain, Fulgent Distraction
Throne of Geth is good, but I hoped it would wheel, whilst Necrogen Scudder is very good indeed, and a card I would often first-pick.
Pack 2 pick 4:
Vector Asp, Neurok Invisimancer, Kuldotha Rebirth, Copperhorn Scout, Dross Hopper, Carrion Call, Darksteel Myr, Glimmerpost, Acid Web Spider, Blackcleave Cliffs, Nihil Spellbomb, Plains
This is where I also decided that proliferating U/B infect was probably just not as strong as regular B/G and jumped straight on this spell, which also acts occasionally as removal.
Pack 2 pick 5:
Neurok Invisimancer, Blight Mamba, Ichorclaw Myr, Vulshok Heartstoker, Tangle Angler, Tunnel Ignus, Carapace Forger, Sunspear Shikari, Vulshok Replica, Chrome Steed, Forest
Tangle Angler is one of the best and with the two pieces of equipment from the first pack, I was sure he’d do some good work.
Pack 2 pick 6:
Corpse Cur, Riddlesmith, Throne of Geth, Psychic Miasma, Whitesun’s Passage, Auriok Sunchaser (FOIL), Razorfield Thresher, Scoria Elemental, Swamp, Scrapdiver Serpent
Corpse Cur is excellent, and the obvious pick here, though it’s worth noting the late Riddlesmith had we gone a different route, and the Throne which we hope to wheel.
Pack 2 pick 7:
Ezuri’s Archers, Ichorclaw Myr, Ichorclaw Myr (FOIL), Vault Skyward, Corrupted Harvester, Tel-Jilad Fallen, Plague Stinger, Soul Parry, Forest
Again with the late packs full of infect cards. I’m not sure I made this pick correctly, but I was valuing evasion over the other guys largely because of my equipment.
Pack 2 pick 8:
Lumengrid Drake, Ferrovore, Strider Harness, Bleak Coven Vampires, Trinket Mage, Liquimetal Coating, Forest, Fume Spitter
Here’s a good one, often underrated, but excellent in B/R aggro and very solid in infect.
Pack 2 pick 9:
Melt Terrain, Vault Skyward, Copperhorn Scout (FOIL), Blunt the Assault, Loxodon Wayfarer, Bellowing Tanglewurm, Plains
If I pick up enough green infect guys, this thing becomes nuts. Still a late fatty also.
Pack 2 pick 10:
Blight Mamba, Darkslick Drake, Ichorclaw Myr, Vedalken Certarch, Neurok Replica, Mountain
Happy to wheel this. I was also trying to get a fairly even spread of the various two-drop guys as they all perform well in different circumstances.
Pack 2 pick 11:
Shape Anew, Copperhorn Scout, Throne of Geth, Mountain, Fulgent Distraction
There’s one on the wheel, good times.
Pack 2 pick 12:
Copperhorn Scout, Dross Hopper, Glimmerpost, Plains
Pack 2 pick 13:
Blight Mamba, Ichorclaw Myr, Forest
Again super late infect creatures, making me a very happy man.
Pack 2 pick 14:
Psychic Miasma, Swamp
Pack 2 pick 15:
The deck got a hell of a lot better with this pack, with some very late infect cards suggesting that I may be one of the only infect drafters at the table – great news for me!
Pack 3 pick 1:
Kuldotha Rebirth, Ichorclaw Myr, Copperhorn Scout, Blackcleave Goblin, Barrage Ogre, Tel-Jilad Fallen, Arc Trail, Sunspear Shikari, Prototype Portal, Panic Spellbomb, Disperse, Trigon of Mending, Saberclaw Golem, Forest, Fulgent Distraction
I passed on this guy earlier and occasionally he just gets there. Also a very solid blocker against much of the field.
Pack 3 pick 2:
Glint Hawk Idol, Ezuri’s Archers, Melt Terrain, Lumengrid Drake, Dross Hopper, Ferrovore, Steady Progress, Silver Myr, Trigon of Rage, Dissipation Field, Echo Circlet, Bellowing Tanglewurm, Nihil Spellbomb, Plains
Less here for me than before, though the Trigon is often good for pushing through damage and I had no Untamed Might at this time.
Pack 3 pick 3:
Neurok Invisimancer, Copperhorn Scout, Dross Hopper, Carrion Call, Flesh Allergy, Bleak Coven Vampires, Moriok Replica, Glimmerpost, Nihil Spellbomb, Disperse, Plains, Engulfing Slagwurm, Fulgent Distraction
Probably should have taken flesh allergy, but I am fond of the infect deck that just plays about 20 infect guys and grinds away with inevitability, rather than those that try to do all kinds of fancy stuff.
Pack 3 pick 4:
Grasp of Darkness, Vulshok Heartstoker, Bonds of Quicksilver, Quicksilver Gargantuan, Slice in Twain, Vedalken Certarch, Sunspear Shikari, Vulshok Replica, Turn to Slag, Saberclaw Golem, Mountain, Skinrender
This time I swear I was going to take the Grasp, but y’know I make a big exception to the deck idea I just mentioned above for this guy. Way too good.
Pack 3 pick 5:
Blight Mamba, Blade-Tribe Berserkers, Ichor Rats, Vulshok Heartstoker, Corpse Cur, Alpha Tyrranax, Trigon of Corruption, Glint Hawk, Auriok Edgewright (FOIL), Forest, Fume Spitter
Ichor Rats is a nice one that helps out with proliferating shenanigans and occasionally finishes games without the need for an attack step. Very good with Corpse Cur, also.
Pack 3 pick 6:
Contagious Nim, Untamed Might, Turn Aside, Tel-Jilad Defiance, Wall of Tanglecord, Blistergrub, Psychic Miasma, Acid Web Spider, Golden Urn, Mountain
There it is – every infect deck needs at least one of these.
Pack 3 pick 7:
Halt Order, Bloodshot Trainee, Instill Infection, Tel-Jilad Defiance, Golem’s Heart, Cystbearer, Flameborn Hellion, Copperline Gorge, Swamp
Very solid in the 3-drop slot and the cards keep coming.
Pack 3 pick 8:
Blade-Tribe Berserkers, Ichor Rats, Bonds of Quicksilver, Blistergrub, Whitesun’s Passage, Plague Stinger, Razorfield Thresher, Plains
Pleased with my second one of these, definitely.
Pack 3 pick 9:
Kuldotha Rebirth, Ichorclaw Myr, Copperhorn Scout, Blackcleave Goblin, Disperse, Forest, Fulgent Distraction
I wanted as many early guys as possible, with Skittles holding up the late game, I didn’t really need the Goblin.
Pack 3 pick 10:
Melt Terrain, Steady Progress, Echo Circlet, Bellowing Tanglewurm, Nihil Spellbomb, Plains
Another of these, though I wasn’t going to play the first.
Pack 3 pick 11:
Copperhorn Scout, Dross Hopper, Glimmerpost, Plains, Fulgent Distraction
Pack 3 pick 12:
Vulshok Heartstoker, Bonds of Quicksilver, Quicksilver Gargantuan, Mountain
Big Clone, here we go!
Pack 3 pick 13:
Vulshok Heartstoker, Alpha Tyrranax, Forest
Pack 3 pick 14:
Psychic Miasma, Mountain
Pack 3 pick 15:
I played the obvious cards and infected people an awful lot, though I only got to cast Skittles once. First round against metalcraft was a cakewalk, second against B/R aggro was tricky as that deck always has ALL OF THE REMOVAL, but I got there in the third game when he drew apparently nothing but lands and spellbombs. Unfortunately, my opponent in the final round really wanted to split, so I didn’t get to play the third round though I was pretty confident in its ability to win against most opposition.
