Crime Never Pays

Another project for 2011! Awesome! This time round, I’m supplying some music and ambient noise for a video game level that Binky is making as part of his degree. The game itself has been described to me as being like “28 Days Later but with werewolves and set in neo-China”. This quite clearly being the best exposition that I have ever heard. I can visualise a full theatrical trailer even better than the recent one for Dead Island (if you haven’t watched it then, well… do so!). The preview above clearly shows off some of the setting and stylistic decisions for the level – now imagine it with some creepy, droney, glitchy, horrific ambient noise behind it all. That’s my job:

Just after everything went tits up.

This is just a little snapshot of one of the setups that I was using to create some sounds last weekend, and as the caption and my post from Friday alluded to, things went a little awry. My adaptor decided to stop working (no idea whatsoever why that should be the case) and so I didn’t get a whole lot done, but it’s fine again now. I’m hoping to start recording the music for this project, or demos at least, throughout March. As soon as I have something to show, I’ll post it here.

P.s. for any tech-heads out there, the equipment in the above photo (L-R) is:
Top Row: Dwarfcraft Devices Shiva, Audible Disease Convulsion CN-2, Devi Ever Bit Mangler
Middle Row: Behringer Xenyx 1002, FM3 buddha Machine, Ibanez CS5, Audible Disease Rupture RP-2, Ibanez AD-9, Behringer FD300, Audible Disease Junk-Fi JF-2, M.A.S.F. SCM
Bottom Row: Korg Electribe EA-1 Mkii, BugBrand μCrusher, Korg Electribe ER-1 Mkii

All Apologies

At the beginning of this year I made a small commitment, didn’t make a big song and dance about it, but did mention it – that I was intending to post at least one thing on here every single day this year. Admittedly some days that has literally meant just a picture of something with no real content, but it is something. Yesterday I failed, I was too busy with work and my weekend of gigging to sit down for long enough to write anything. And so I just wanted to say…

I'm sorry...

Apologies aside, I think I must be missing something about this PHD ‘We Are The Future’ video that’s been causing a furore on YouTube (and related Tweets). Maybe I’m just still half-asleep… Anybody care to enlighten me?

Get low.

My blogging time this weekend is going to be severely impeded, what with working, back-to-back gigs, trying to spend some time with the girlfriend, attempting to prepare Call of Cthulhu for next week and job hunting. That being said, I will try my best. For today, however, I would just like to plug tonight’s gig one final time:

Hitchin’s infamous Club 85 from 7:45 the mighty BlackEye headline with support from Inner Hatred, Embers of Angels and Black Polaris who kindly thought of me when looking for someone to fill in their vacant bassist position. I”mma get low… (sorry for the picture guys!)

I get to use my full range of pedals tonight (always good for a laugh) as my daisy chain power adaptor decided that actually it wasn’t dead, just resting, as well as one of these bad boys:

Cheers JD!

That which is not dead… I choose you!

Gotta catch ’em all… without losing your mind!

Admit it, you would play that game, wouldn’t you? People of a certain age (i.e. around my own) will have fairly vivid memories of the Pokémon craze sweeping through schools across the country, and of spending ridiculous money in search of foil Charizard. Pssh… kids, eh? (*ahem*magic:thegatheringsecondarymarket*ahem*) Then of course there was/is the immensely popular video games. A version of said game that took the original premise and filled it with eldritch, cosmic horror would be right up my street. Turns out, some people have already thought of it…

Pikathulhu Fhtagn!

To quote straight from the page of the RPG of the same name: “Amid the sagging gables of old New England, evil lurks . . . and squirms, and scuttles, and purrs. Grownups are fleeing in terror, hiding behind the Elder Sign. You’re 10 years old. You’re our last hope. Armed with a Shining Dodecahedron and the elder incantations to make it work, you capture the monsters and train them to use their power . . . But not for evil. For sport. You’ve thrilled to the popular TV show. Now, you can play the game!

Maverick Modding, pt.7

Grinding it down, man…

Work in progress shot, obv.

This is almost certainly (i.e. barring some unforseen disaster) the penultimate blog post about the modifications that I have been doing to / wreaking upon my Nerf N-Strike Maverick. I’m sure that the Airsoft guys are laughing at us, yes. And everyone else over the age of twelve, but whatever.

The final stage is purely aesthetic as it consisted of me slicing, filing and sanding down all the unsightly parts of the gun’s outer casing such as the N-Strike shield, the weird bobbles on the grip (as in the picture above) and all the other embossed writing such as the gun’s name along the undercarriage and the safety warnings on the side, which from memory read something like:

  • Do not aim at eyes or face.
  • Do not modify dart blaster or darts.
  • Do not have any kind of fun whatsoever.
  • Do not hit your friends with anything harder than some wimpily-thrown down feather.
  • More boring crap.

Point is, all that stuff has gone the way of all mould lines, and all the screw holes and other gaps are being Green Stuffed ready for the paint job and any other extra stuff I feel like adding to it – the final stage!

P.s. maybe it’s time for Airsoft next? We’re already stocking up on paint/smoke grenades for paintballing on the stag weekend next month.

Just Bear Stuffs

My band There Were Bears are mobilising this year. It’s been some time since we released our first e.p. Mornings and we finally started demoing tracks for the new record before Christmas. That was the first batch of five demos and as far as I’m aware we intend to do the same again with another batch or two until we have the right mix of songs, and the right versions of those songs for the album. We have already cut a couple of previously dead certs. from the album (though there will be a split vinyl appearing sometime soon using at least one of these – more details to follow).

I don’t actually know for certain if I’m supposed to be divulging this information, but here we go – spoiler alert – the name of the new record, our first full length album will be: ‘You are seen, you are known, you are loved.’

There Was Beard

After that bombshell, here’s a picture of Matt and his mighty beard, grown for a charity bet. It’s really rather amazing. It’s also important to document whilst it still exists as it may not even be present at our next gig – which is this coming Saturday at Bedford Esquires as main support to homegrown heroes Flood of Red. If you’re in the area you should come on down!

Monday Movie Madness

Amazing music video from one of my favourite artists – if you haven’t listened to FlyLo before, then you are seriously missing out.

Anyone who has been paying attention recently will have seen the new trailer for Dead Island. Here’s a pretty emotional take on it using Shaun of the Dead.

Finally my favourite scene from one of my favourite films, Cube. ‘Big Brother is not watching you.’ Brutal.

Who knows if this will be a weekly thing…

Welcome to my blog.
