That which is not dead… I choose you!

Gotta catch ’em all… without losing your mind!

Admit it, you would play that game, wouldn’t you? People of a certain age (i.e. around my own) will have fairly vivid memories of the Pokémon craze sweeping through schools across the country, and of spending ridiculous money in search of foil Charizard. Pssh… kids, eh? (*ahem*magic:thegatheringsecondarymarket*ahem*) Then of course there was/is the immensely popular video games. A version of said game that took the original premise and filled it with eldritch, cosmic horror would be right up my street. Turns out, some people have already thought of it…

Pikathulhu Fhtagn!

To quote straight from the page of the RPG of the same name: “Amid the sagging gables of old New England, evil lurks . . . and squirms, and scuttles, and purrs. Grownups are fleeing in terror, hiding behind the Elder Sign. You’re 10 years old. You’re our last hope. Armed with a Shining Dodecahedron and the elder incantations to make it work, you capture the monsters and train them to use their power . . . But not for evil. For sport. You’ve thrilled to the popular TV show. Now, you can play the game!

Go, Cthonyx!

Based on the (utterly non-existent) TV show of the same name, Pokéthulhu is exactly as it sounds, a mash-up of its two sources and an actual, fully functioning roleplaying game with a core rulebook you can download for free in PDF form over here featuring artwork from the legendary John Kovalic. Other art I found on the internet whilst searching about included this grim offering:

Monsters that live in the space between pockets...

However, I think probably my favourite thing of all that I found on my search though would be the image below. Whilst not following exactly the trend of Pokémon-style versions of Lovecraftian monstrosities, it is nonetheless an incredibly cutesy rendering of various Outer Gods, Great Old Ones and other beings beyond our human comprehension…

For completion’s sake, the characters you see above (L-R, from the top) are as follows:
Cthulhu, Dagon, Eihort, Basatan, Juk-Shabb, Cxaxukluth, Hastur, Aphoom-Zhah, Rhogog, Chaugnar Faugn, Othuyeg, Tsathoggua, Cyäegha, Cthugha, Yig, Q’yth-az, Y’golonac, Cynothoglys, Glaaki, Bokrug, The Dweller in the Gulf, Shudde M’ell, Ithaqua, Vulthoom, Saa’itii.

    My Call of Cthulhu group:

Me: Guys we have to play this.
    Boyfriend: This is ridiculous.
    Me: -Reading from rulebook-
    Boyfriend: No. Stop.
Me: Please you have to run it for us!
    Boyfriend: That is not happening.
Me: Why doesn’t he want to Will? ):
    Keeper (Will): Because it’s stupid.
    Me: No, listen!
    Keeper: Kill me.
    Me: ;_________;

That’s pretty much how it went. No one will play it with me. I need better friends.

Ah that sucks! I haven’t spoken to my group about it yet, but I’m sure they’ll be up for it.

The problems will arise when they realise how silly it is, they tend to lose all concentration (our sessions are normally pretty chilled anyway, much less than that = not gaming at all).

Saying that, I haven’t had a chance to properly read through all of the rules – do let me know how you get on with it if you get a game in!
