I <3 Noise


Daniel Clough is a sound artist/electroacoustic composer living in London. He explores subjects such as noise, vocal manipulation, field recordings, drones, algorithmic compositional techniques and computer synthesis to create his work.”

He’s also a good friend of mine and is working on a compositional language of his own design for noise (an example of which you can see above). He’s finally using his blog again (I know, I’ve been a bit crap the past few days too) and has put some sweet sound clips up, as well as a bit of artwork and some links to free EPs. You should check it out, even if you wouldn’t normally listen to anything experimental, noisy, droney, whatever. Big up.

I completely missed the fact that yesterday’s post was in fact the 200th of this blog. Perhaps my doodling wasn’t the best way to mark that particular occasion. Here are some pictures to rectify the situation.

Hell Yeah

The gig that I’m (easily) most excited about going to this year just got better. Especially as the tickets were an early birthday gift from my beautiful girlfriend Laura. Can’t wait to get my free ep, either. If I had to describe it, I’d say it was the best.

There Were Bears returned to Esquires and…this keyboard enhanced five piece really are dull. Very akin to Coldplay on mogadon. The band say little except to make mention of their prevoius visit. Another yawn.”

Sabbath, Slayer and Top Gear


Yesterday in town I picked up, amongst other things, a copy of Hellfire Reign by Hang the Bastard – and it is excellent. As the band’s description on their record label website (more on this below) states: “You’ve heard all the individual elements (hardcore breakdowns, lumbering stoner riffs, fast thrash attacks) before, but you’ve never heard it combined like this.”

From the crushing instrumental doom intro Acid Bath Vampire, replete with psyched out synth courtesy of James of Rolo Tomassi fame all the way through to the Slayer- and Black Sabbath-fuelled riffs, all layered with throat-shredding confessional howls and defiant bellows, this release is truly brutal. Not in any kind of bullshit trendy beatdown sense, but real, raw brutality – this CD comes on like a hurricane of razor blades and leaves no survivors. The album also features guest vocals from Nick of Dead Swans and draped in gorgeously sinister artwork by Raf Wechterowicz (as you can see above).


This release came out on the Holy Roar record label, home of such vital bands of the UK underground as Crocus and Maths (whom I have had the pleasure of playing with) as well as the legendary, now sadly defunct Cutting Pink With Knives, Throats and Tortuga. Aside from being mildly devastated to learn of the demise of these last few bands, the label really is going strong with more new releases all the time, all the absolute cream of the crop. Crime Never Pays

Another project for 2011! Awesome! This time round, I’m supplying some music and ambient noise for a video game level that Binky is making as part of his degree. The game itself has been described to me as being like “28 Days Later but with werewolves and set in neo-China”. This quite clearly being the best exposition that I have ever heard. I can visualise a full theatrical trailer even better than the recent one for Dead Island (if you haven’t watched it then, well… do so!). The preview above clearly shows off some of the setting and stylistic decisions for the level – now imagine it with some creepy, droney, glitchy, horrific ambient noise behind it all. That’s my job:

This is just a little snapshot of one of the setups that I was using to create some sounds last weekend, and as the caption and my post from Friday alluded to, things went a little awry. My adaptor decided to stop working (no idea whatsoever why that should be the case) and so I didn’t get a whole lot done, but it’s fine again now. I’m hoping to start recording the music for this project, or demos at least, throughout March. As soon as I have something to show, I’ll post it here.
